Abraham Luxor Mohammed
January 10, 1935 - August 25, 2013
Dr. Abraham Luxor Mohammed of Miami, Florida, who was born Frederick Douglass Lewis, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Miami, Florida. He was 78.
He was born to the late Martin Luther Lewis and the late Willie Mae Lewis, January 10, 1935 in Jackson, Mississippi. At a young age, he moved to Washington, DC with his family. He attended Dunbar HS and graduated in 1952. He received a BS degree in Chemistry from Howard University in 1956. He continued his education at Howard University Medical School and received his Medical (MD) Degree in 1960. He joined the US Navy in 1961 and served for nine years attaining the rank of Naval Commander. While living in California, he took residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University and became a Physiatrist. While in California he also joined the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He was Chief of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Oakland Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA from 1965 - 1970. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Washington, DC and opened a private practice which included Acupuncture in addition to other medical treatments. In 1972 he founded and directed the Acupuncture Clinic of America in Washington, DC. He was in several well known publications and was featured in the November, 1973 issue of Ebony Magazine for his expertise in Acupuncture. He also worked as a physician at Glenn Dale Hospital in Prince George's County, MD.
For many, he was known for his generosity, quick wit and great since of humor. His hobbies included photography, chess, woodworking, and cars. He also enjoyed listening to jazz music, watching boxing matches, and traveling. In addition to his travels throughout the US, he visited Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the Great Wall of China, and the Nazi Concentration Camps in Germany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers: Martin L. Lewis, Jr., James E. Lewis and Virgil L. Lewis. He is survived by his wife Elide De Oliveira of Pompano Beach, Florida. In addition, he is survived by his first wife of 25 years, Esterlyn P. Lewis of Silver Spring, MD and their three children: Deborah L. Hamer, of Silver Spring, MD; Kimberly Y. Lewis of Silver Spring, MD; and Frederick D. Lewis, Jr. of Washington, DC and two grandchildren: Whitney J. Hamer and Austin D. Hamer of Silver Spring, MD. He is also survived by a sister, Pamela L. Crutchfield of Washington, DC and a host of extended family and friends.
