"In the 73 years that Douglas lived, he was so many things to so many people. He was a generous and loving person, a devoted son, a brother, an uncle, a father, and a dear friend. Douglas was a proud Vietnam Veteran and, for those who knew and loved him, a ball of energy, truly larger than life."
Douglas Eugene Lee, age 73, formerly of Erie, PA, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023, in Miami Beach, Florida. He was born August 28, 1950, in Erie, PA, to Lucy Williams Hunter and the late Elijah L. Lee, Jr. He attended Academy High School, and at age 19, he entered the United States Navy. His initial installation was at U.S. Naval Station TI, San Francisco, CA. His last duty assignment was aboard the USS Wallace L. Lind (DD-703). With a deep interest in history, he could detail the story of The Sullivan Brothers and the "U.S. Navy Policy Regarding Family Members Serving Together at Sea" and why he and his brothers Mitchell and Thomas did not serve together on the same ship. After Honorable Discharge, he served in Bainbridge, Maryland, at the Naval Reserve Manpower Center. Friends and family remember Douglas for his stylish dress from head to toe. He was a big fan of James Brown's music and loved to dance.
Some of you may have seen him during his Birthday Month last August, dancing on stage with his niece Pamela during a concert at Perry Square. A lover of warm climates, Douglas later moved to Miami, Florida. He attended Miami Dade College's School of Continuing Education and Professional Development. Mr. Lee was one of a few skilled workers who successfully completed the Training for Manufactured Construction (TRAMCON) program, which included principles from the US Department of Labor's standards and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. He worked as a journeyman electrician for several companies in the Miami area, including Unlimited Electrical Contractors and Morse-Disel Construction. After formally retiring in 2020, he enjoyed traveling to the island of St. Thomas. Douglas did his best to live life to the fullest. He loved life and had a kind heart and a caring soul. He accepted the right hand of fellowship from his brother, Rev. James A. Lee I, and confessed the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. The Saints are rejoicing!
In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Margaret Ann Davis, and brothers, Mr. Henry Erving Lee, Mr. Mitchell Gregory Lee, Stepbrother, Mr. Sanders W. Ridgeway, and significant other, Ms. Renee Wilson.
Survivors include his beloved mother, Mrs. Lucy Williams Hunter; his brothers, Rev. James A. Lee I, Mr. Thomas L. Lee, Clark Hunter, and Mr. Timothy James Lee (Esther); and sisters, Mrs. Constance Ratcliff (Elder Tony Ratcliff); Mrs. Joann Sharper (Rodney Sharper) and Stepsister, Mrs. Laura E. Ridgeway Hudson (Frank); son, Mr. Antowan Dupree Lee and daughter by relationship, Mrs. Catresa Monique Hicks (Tracy Hicks).
Douglas is further survived by his cousin and best friend Frederick Ramon Richburg of Front Royal, VA, cousin Vernon Gambill, and long-time friends Scott Harris and Roy Johnson from Erie. PA. The family thanks Ms. Dessie Harris, Erie, PA, for her friendship and loving-kindness. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who survive, love, and miss him deeply.
When news of his death reached members of the care team at the Bruce W. Carter Medical Center, Nurse Vera Gonzales called in tears. "He was such a good and kind man. He is missed by many." The family would like to thank his Miami community and all those who helped and cared for Douglas along the way. God bless you.
