Jeremy Christian Smith, age 50, passed peacefully but unexpectedly in his sleep on January 27, 2021. Jeremy was an only child. He is survived by his much-loved son, Sebastian Brice Smith who Jer would proudly say teaches school in Japan. He is also survived by his mother, Sharon Stowe Smith who he had just taken to a delightfully fun birthday dinner two days earlier. His father, Jimmy Batson Smith predeceased him. He has a favorite Aunt, Sue Stowe of Boca Raton, Fl, a much loved best friend, John Prince of Toronto, Canada, and about 35 cousins scattered all over the country. Jeremy had a wicked sense of humor and loved to travel and had just returned from trips to Alaska, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan and Curacao in the year prior to the pandemic.
Jeremy served his country after graduating having been Private Benjamined by a recruiter who visited Spanish River High School in Boca Raton Fl. He was sent straight from boot camp in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma to the Saudi War but the planes could not land because of well, war and bombs and his plane was diverted to a small base in Dulmen, Germany. He learned to drink beer in Germany and he did prefer imported beer. He was hurt in a munitions explosion in Germany that changed the course of his life forever leaving him with PTSD and a back injury that plagued him but did not stop him. His service in Germany ended when the Berlin Wall came down and the U.S closed his military base.
Jeremy had a big heart and was an advocate for the homeless. He also helped other Veterans in navigating the VA Benefits system. He was a friend to everyone he met and had no time for gossip or backstabbing. He would literally give the shirt off his back to the homeless and did so on many occasions. He was an avid reader and always donated his read books to the VA. Jeremy was very skilled and a great help to his Mother in staging and flipping real estate properties. He painted, did carpentry and could fix anything effortlessly and fast.
There will be a Celebration of Life Saturday, Feb 13 at his mother's home in Coral Springs from 1:30-4:00. At 2:00, an Honor Guard will play Taps and fold a flag as a tribute to his military service to our Country. Friends and family are welcome to record a video that will be played or you may speak at the Celebration. As Jer would have wanted, there will be beer, preferably imported, to celebrate his life cut short. Masks required, please.
Jeremy died of heart disease that was genetic on his Father's side. He was not aware he had it, and never had any real symptoms until his last two nights which he thought was heartburn. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Salvation Army.
